For the first time, after more than 100 performances around the world and after more than 10 years since its original premiere in 2007, the musical will be presented with live music performed by members of the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of musical director Jed Balsamo for both shows.

Siddharta The Musical

Noted Cebuano composer, Jude Gitamondoc, wrote the book, music and lyrics of Siddhartha the musical that chronicles the life of the Indian Prince who became the Buddha. It is based on the ‘Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha’ written by Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The FGS Buddhist order has a long history in the Philippines with temples in Manila, Ilo-ilo, Bacolod and Cebu where this musical was created.

Leading the cast are noted Cebuano musical artists including; Benjie Layos, Junrey Alayacyac, JJ Ang and Ivy Gallur. The rest of the cast include the artists, students and scholars of FGS at the Guang Ming Institute for the Performing Arts (Cebu) and Guang Ming College (Manila). These two institutions, inspired by the initial success of the musical, have become one of Fo Guang Shan’s main thrusts in the Philippines - fostering talents through education. All proceeds of the Siddhartha shows are earmarked for FGS educational programs.

Manila based artists contribute their talents for this re-imagining of the play. Choreography will be by Al Bernard Garcia, dramaturgy by Katherine Sabate, scenic design is by Ohm David with projections by GA Fallarme, costumes by James Reyes, lighting design by Roman Cruz and direction by former Ballet Philippines artistic director Paul Alexander Morales.

After its limited run at Solaire the musical and its all Filipino cast and crew is set for its second tour of the United States with performances in New York (Nov 11), Houston (Nov 18), Las Vegas (Nov 21) and Los Angeles (Dec 1).

Presented by Fo Guang Shan Foundation Inc , the Buddha’s Light International Association, Solaire with the support of Philippine Airlines.
