Directed by Ann Hui, the movie is adapted from Eileen Chang’s first short story. Set in 1930s, Wei Long travels to Hong Kong from Shanghai to pursue her education. Struggling financially, she asks her aunt to help pay for tuition but ends up being her aunt’s puppet to lure rich men. When Wei Long falls for playboy, George, she sinks into a life of depravity.
