About the Event
"Punktion" -- Carlo "Ubong" De Guzman's one man show opens at Kanto Artist-Run Space on October 7, 2017 and will run until October 21.
"The walls in the street become a space on which one could create texts and images, where people could express themselves, regarded as vandalism in the eyes of many. This act has become widely known as an alternative way of getting across the message to the public.
On the walls, abstraction could be seen even before the images and texts could be laid down. Paralleled with my pieces "PUNKTION," these were conceived out of the determination to create despite the brimming anger felt towards the abusive and powerful.
I coined the term "PUNKTION" to underscore the need to be functional in every way amidst the struggles, no matter how small. "PUNKTION" also refers to the people I know who continue to fight the forces that abuse our consciousness and devalue our existence. "PUNKTION" will continue to reflect and maintain order and balance within ourselves and our fellow beings, whom we offer to help.
I want to bring vandalism to a place and put it down to a canvas where the random treatment of lines, shapes, letters, and images coming from the influence of "punk", "hard core" and aggressive music and scenes, opens up my consciousness as a person. In the process, I hope to translate vandalism into a formal treat."
