If Flappy Bird was too simple with its repetitive tapping mechanics, the next big hit required far more than just your thumbs to play. Pokemon GO redefined the “mobile” in mobile gaming. It took the popular franchise, combined it with AR-integrated gameplay, and made us travel to different places to “catch ‘em all” Pokemons.
16. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang brought the popular MOBA gameplay of DoTA and League of Legends to mobile. From its humble beginnings back in 2016, the game now has a roster of over 90 heroes, and offers additional game modes such as Survival and Magic Chess. Tournaments for MLBB players have also been held in Southeast Asia, where most players of the game come from. Mobile Legends continues to enjoy popularity here in the country, but we’ll soon see if it will stay on top of other MOBAs on mobile when League of Legends releases its mobile version, Wild Rift.

17. PUBG Mobile
PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds made multiplayer battle royale games popular on mobile phones. It is just like other first person shooter games, except it brings together up to 100 players in one game, set on a vast map that gets smaller and smaller over time. PUBG started a trend, and soon after, other FPS games also added a Battle Royale Mode for their players.
18. Call of Duty: Mobile
Call of Duty is one of the most popular franchises when it comes to first person shooter games. When it became available on mobile, it also offered the battle royale mechanics that have taken players by storm. But since CoD has been in the game genre long before the rise of smartphones, it was quick to create a more immersive atmosphere for players, overtaking PUBG on the charts of App Store and Play Store.
19. Adorable Home
Remember the days before the pandemic got us stuck at home? We were mostly playing this game about being stuck at home– Adorable Home. This simulation game was simple but satisfying with its adorable aesthetics. After all, who doesn’t want to decorate their own homes, play with their own pets, and live with the guy/girl of their dreams?

20. Among Us
The current mobile game craze in the country, Among Us has actually been around since 2018. In this game, a group of players must finish all tasks in preparation for their ship’s departure. But impostors are lurking among them, killing the crew and sabotaging their mission. What really makes this game a lot of fun is the discussion and the voting that comes after, where as a crewmate, you must figure out who the impostor is; or as the impostor, you must bluff and put the blame on others.
We can expect that smartphones will just continue evolving rapidly in the upcoming years. And with such a speedy advancement, we wonder what’s the next big mobile gaming innovation. Well, as we’ve observed in the past few years, we might not need to wait too long to see.
