About the Event

The Cultural Center of the Philippines, together with the Writer’s Bloc and Tanghalang Pilipino will host anew the VirginLabfest, a festival of untried, unstaged and untested one act plays from June 29 to July 17, 2016. IdeaFirst, a new partner, joins this year’s endeavor.

Taking the theme of “Binyag”, twelve new featured works, 5 staged readings, three plays are featured in site specific works known as Fragments, 10 five minute plays created by Filipino writing fellows, four films based on plays originally staged at the Labfest and three plays which were tried and tested in the Labfest 11.

This year’s “Virgin Playwrights” include Fellowship graduates May Cardoso and Soc Delos Reyes.  Kanakan Balintagos known as much for his work in film as in theater, National Book Award Winner Eliza Victoria, multi awarded poet Ma. Cecilia dela Rosa and web content writer Rick Patriarca. They are joined by returning veteran Dr. Oggie Arcenas, Maynard Manansala, Eljay Castro Deldoc, Juan Miguel Severo, Dingdong Novenario, Herlyn Alegre, Dominique La Victoria, Guelan Luarca and Carlo Vergara of Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah fame.

For the first time, there will be a staged reading of a musical written by multi awarded Vince de Jesus.  The other featured writers of the Staged Readings are Layeta Bucoy, Job Pagsibigan, labfest actor, director and now virgin playwright Jonathan Tadioan and virgin playwright Adrian Ho.

The subjects in each play are as varied as the playwrights - they deal with the universal subjects of family, of love, of longing.  But there are also social commentaries, science fiction works and the very tricky relationship between different faiths.

Fragments – the site specific plays where performers pop up when least expected feature the PUP Sining Polyrepertory.  The works are by Labfest virgins Dwein Baltazar and Alex Dungca.  They are joined by veteran and Fellowshop graduate Jerome Ignacio.

In recognition of the plays which have crossed over into film, for the first time, screenings of J. Dennis Teodosio’s Gee Gee at Waterina, Denisa Reyes and Mark Gary’s Hubad, Emmanuel Palo’s David F, based on Liza Magtoto’s Paigan and Law Fajardo’s multi awarded Imbisibol will be held. One of the newest partners, Pelikulove, is a film outfit diving into a collaboration with a theater festival.
