About the Event

On April 13, 2019, 7PM at the Ayala Museum, Cultural Arts Events Organizers will be presenting a handful of the country’s top young vocal artists in a concert of sacred music, including the Philippine premiere of a Bach cantata.

De Profondis

Titled “De Profundis” (English translation: “Out of the depths”), the concert features a lineup of rarely performed sacred music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras.

The concert opens with Mozart’s Laudate Dominum, lifted from the composer’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, followed by the Philippine premiere of Bach’s penitential cantata BWV 131 “Aus der Tiefen rufe ich,” a setting of Psalm 131 “De Profundis” from which the concert’s title is lifted. The program ends with an unabridged performance of Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, a work most known for its exquisite “Pie Jesu.”

Featured soloists are Stefanie Quintin and Cipriano “Zip” de Guzman, Jr., both of whom proudly represented the country in international tilts back in 2018. Quintin bagged the second prize in the professional category of the 2nd ASEAN Vocal Competition in Singapore, while De Guzman copped a first prize in the open category of the 17th Roma International Music Competition Grand Prize Virtuoso in Rome, Italy.

The concert will also premiere newly-formed PASIPO, a vocal ensemble dedicated towards the art of virtuosic chamber music. Its members include Elle Tuason, Angelo Benipayo, Jasmin Salvo, Jane Wee, Leo Angelo Lanuza, Jan Briane Astom, John Philip Bautista, Airo Saret, and Carlo Miguel Bunyi.

Accompanying them on the piano is award-winning chamber artist Gabriel Allan Paguirigan.

Quintin, one of the country’s leading exponent of Baroque vocal music and a fixture in the annual International Bamboo Organ Festival, expressed her admiration for the three composers represented in the program. “Mozart, Bach, and Fauré served their respective churches as music directors and organists, leading them to write music that uplift the soul,” she said.

She also stressed the significance of the premiere of a Bach cantata, stating that “apart from the Bamboo Organ Festival in Las Piñas, it is rare for a Bach cantata to be performed and premiered here in Manila.”

“I am grateful to have the opportunity to share these masterpieces with everyone - theists and atheists, music enthusiasts or not - these works of art should be heard by all,” Quintin concludes.
