Allegorical in tone, Rustom Cleofe “Ombok” Villamor’s artworks can be described as an interjection of order, a state in fruition. Shifting between certainty and delusion, physical and conceptual, between the thespian and the audience, the works displayed in Villamor’s Apposite Illusion revel in the paradox of nature and its psyche. The triumph of energy glows from the artist’s ethereal paintings, holding tension as light encompasses. The rebirth and renewal of an organic matter becomes part of the minutiae of daily life. With his precise use of strokes and impeccable eye for aesthetic, Villamor connects his viewers to the drifting course of the shifting millieu.
With diverse influences such as the phenomena of the physical world and its decay, new tensions are manufactured from both constructed and discovered discourse. As vibrant derivatives transform through burgeoning diagrams of Villamor’s practice, the viewer is manifested with a tribute to the accuracies of nature’s bewildering truths. What starts out as vision soon becomes corroded into a dialog of rapid development, leaving a sense of what could have been and the possibility of a new synthesis.
Rustom Cleofe “Ombok” Villamor’s oeuvre is characterized by fascinating abstractions of life-forms. The resulting paintings are organic narratives that bring out the rich dynamism and energy of life. This is keeping with the artist’s own explorations of nature – particularly his experience living on the shores of his native Samar. The paintings are most reminiscent of sea-life – a direct link to the artist’s roots – but they also celebrate the delights of other life-forms.
Ombok Villamor is a product of North West Samar State University, where he graduated with a degree in Architecture. A professional graphic artist, Ombok has gained recognition from a variety of award-giving bodies, including being a Finalist in the Non-Representational Category at the 2015 GSIS Art Competition, and a Semi-Finalist in the Oil Category of the 2002 ArtPetron National Student Art Competition.
