About the Event
Artery Art Space is pleased to present “Hypnotic Synthesis” featuring paintings by Art Tavera, Gail Vicente, Wipo, and Eva Yu, that explore states of process and transmutation using line, gesture, pattern, and color, as new approaches to painterly abstraction in depicting psychological conditions into physiological form, the intervention of individual expression into urban space as unique graphic style, sequential imagery and stream of consciousness, and the folding of reality into spaces of fantasy and imagination.
In Wipo’s work painterly gestural strokes perambulate and amass across contoured shapes like second skin stretched over craniums, producing a head full of character containing a curious history of psychological content. His paintings are a new generation abstract expressionism for the analytical mind. Wipo has been exhibiting since 2014 and has shown at various galleries including Nova Gallery and Art Underground.
Eva Yu’s watercolor paintings are an animated deconstruction of events and catalysts like a Futurist ballet depicting the simultaneous possibility of the moment. In addition, Yu’s abstractions have a Pop sensibility that seems to explore the sequential narratives of cinema with computer-generated-imaging effects. Eva Yu is a graduate of De La Salle, College of Saint Benilde, with a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design and Merchandising. She has shown at Post Gallery and Galerie Roberto.
Negotiating gestural abstraction with the wild writing style of street art creates for Art Tavera a series of works that explore the intricate flat perspectives of painting with the multi-dimensional phenomena of urban space. Tavera’s allover patterned abstraction echoes the density and velocity of life in the city while pushing the language of contemporary painting. Tavera has shown at Jakarta, Indonesia’s Museum Nasional, and in Manila at Kalawakan Space Time, Project 20, and Joya Gallery.
Gail Vicente’s compositions lie in between states of familiarity and dream, depicting spatial folds and fissures in time that points to the experience of creation and the desire for alterity - turning painting into a cryptogram of the collective unconscious. Vicente’s paintings are stylish renditions of landscape with a thoughtful process on subjectivity and nature as a precarious state of being. Vicente is a graduate of the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts, and has shown at West Gallery, MoSpace, and Project 20.
