About the Event

A Fine Arts graduate of the University of the Philippines (Major in Painting), Norlie Meimban worked for years in animation. He worked as an artist in animation in the United States for a number of years.  At Fil Cartoons, he supervised projects of popular animation such as Joseph the Dreamer of Dreamworks and Tarzan and Lilo and Stitch under Disney Philippines.  He specialized as an “in betweener,” focusing on the sequence motion of the characters' movements.

While doing animation, he never stopped honing and exploring his skills on the canvas as painting is his first love. He joined competitions and was recognized by Metrobank Foundation Art Competition three times. He also won in the GSIS art competition, as a Juror's Choice in 2009.

His latest collections of graphic paintings are creatively rooted in this visual game and field where he fully immersed in.  These figurative paintings are distinctly characterized by clean lines, expressive qualities and sensibilities of the human form which overtly show Meimban’s background in drawing and technical command in figurative art. Mostly, these are sequences of images that create an internal narrative, or it could be another focal image with reconstruction of its motion giving them more lively presence on canvas.  Images are stringed into various poses showing incremental movements in crisp, corporeal rhythms like a time-lapse video on a single surface. The continuum of individually outlined anatomical images suggest and complete a series of unbroken motion and flow.

Meimban has decided to focus full-time on painting, joining countless group shows here and abroad.  He specializes in a style which he has dubbed as “ani-motion” where animation is incorporated in painting.

“Movement” art exhibit by Norlie Meimban will run until March 31, 2017, Art Elements Asian Gallery, Level 3 (L3), SM Aura Premier Mall, BGC, Taguig. Tel: +632-519-9683.
