Netflix has recently revealed that Diana: The Musical will premiere first on the streaming site as a “special presentation” this October 1. This is 2 months before its Broadway debut at the Longacre Theater this December.
The special presentation was filmed at the Longacre Theater without an audience back in 2020. It features the Original Broadway Cast, led by Jeanna de Waal as Diana and Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles. Erin Davie and Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye also join the cast as Camilla Parker Bowles and Queen Elizabeth.
Diana celebrates the life of Princess Diana and the legacy that she left all over the world. It follows the 19-year-old Diana Spencer, who becomes the most famous woman in the world after her engagement to a prince she barely knows. It also shows her struggles as she navigates the life of a royal, and how she finds and devotes her voice to help those who are in need.
The musical comes from the book and lyrics of Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro (Memphis, Nice Work If You Can Get It), and music and lyrics by Tony awardee David Bryan. Tony Winner Christopher Ashley directs the production, with choreography from Kelly Devine. Ian Eisendrath provides the musical supervision and arrangements for the musical.
In a joint statement, the producers of the musical said: “The chance to share our show, first with Netflix’s global audience, and then welcoming a live audience back on Broadway, is something we’ve all been dreaming about for more than a year. We could not be more thrilled to finally share both the film and the Broadway musical with the world.”
