About the Event

Internationally acclaimed spoken word poets Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye are set to perform at the University of Asia & the Pacific (UA&P) in the event entitled Rumpus this May.

It is presented by LOGOS (the professional organization of the Humanities department), in collaboration with Dulaang Rock Opera Company (a premiere theater organization of the university), in order to bring forth the world of Spoken Word to the UA&P community.

Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye are poet writers and published authors from New York City, with Sarah having authored her bestselling book “B”, “The Type” and her collection of poetry from the first decade of her career, “No Matter the Wreckage”, and Phil having published “A Light Bulb Symphony”. Together, they founded and direct Project V.O.I.C.E. (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression), an organization that uses spoken word poetry to entertain, educate, inspire, and encourage creative collaboration and empowerment throughout classrooms and communities all around the world. Armed with only a microphone, these award-winning Project V.O.I.C.E. performers are champions of vulnerability, cheerleaders for the unexpected, and ruthless flashlights for all your heart’s nooks and crannies.

The title Rumpus - which means, “to make noise” - complements what spoken word poetry is all about. It is about causing an uproar, albeit not always literally, and about making a statement about the things that matters to you. Spoken word poetry, alternatively called performance poetry, is an offspring of poetry and theater, wherein the words aren’t just meant to be read silently, or quietly, but performed in a way that the audience can clearly understand the message. It follows the belief that many times, what has to be shown cannot just stay on paper.

The performance introduces the magic of spoken word poetry to those still new to the artform and reinvigorates the love of this art for long-time spoken word fans, and the workshop provides the opportunity to be given an intimate and hands-on tour of spoken word poetry in order to obtain the tools needed for writing and performing as well. With liberal education and arts being a great part of UA&P, and the Literature Department having introduced Poetry classes just last academic year, this event presents the rare opportunity to learn more about this fairly new artform from two performance poets who have long been in this craft.

The performance of Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye is open to those part of the UA&P community, whilst the workshop is open to the students of the university aged 17-21 who also watched the performance.

Students, alumni, and faculty of UA&P are invited to join this event, which will be on May 10, 2016, with the performance in Li Seng Giap auditorium at 1:00-3:00 pm and the workshop in Telengtan Hall from 4:00-5:00 pm.

Those in the UA&P community may purchase tickets in campus or through bank deposit, with more details found on Facebook page.
