Call Me By Your Name (2017)

    R-16 Drama, Romance
    Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer
    Luca Guadagnino

The way their story plays out is just magical. Pacing is excellent. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable. Soundtrack is beyond awesome.

    Echorsis (2016)

    R-13 Comedy, Horror
John Lapus, Kean Cipriano, Alex Vincent Medina
    Lemuel Lorca

I think this is a picture where the director was afforded absolute freedom. It's quirky and makes bold statements without qualms. The actors are good and the story is pretty plausible. Though the shift was rather abrupt, I'd say that the hilarity makes up for it.

    The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016)

    PG Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt
    Cedric Nicolas-Troyan

The backstory was pretty good. They failed to develop the story further though. The story was sacrificed and they overcompensated with effects. It had the usual plotholes and the actors' talents were just not utilized. There was no space for them to exercise their skill. Anyway, I liked it better than the first one.

    10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

    R-13 Drama, Horror, Mystery
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.
    Dan Trachtenberg

One is cliche, why don't we have two? The tension's pretty tight the entire length. The movie has you guessing a lot. You thought you had everything thought out, then it changes. Thriller is an apt description for the film really. It's kind of difficult to rid my head of the scenes.

    Demolition (2016)

    R-13 Comedy, Drama
Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper
    Jean-Marc Vallee

The film is timid but noisy. Timid for its lack of movement, but the noise is entirely visual. We're at a standstill the whole time. You can't deny the humor of taking things apart though. I can't exactly tell why I enjoyed the film. It was a journey of sorts.

    Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis (2016)

    PG Drama, History
John Lloyd Cruz, Piolo Pascual, Susan Africa
    Lav Diaz

'A love letter to the nation' is a very fitting description for this piece. It stirs the nationalism within. An essential watch for each and every Filipino citizen. If I had an overabundance of funds, I'd pay for others to watch this.

    Spotlight (2016)

    R-16 Biography, Drama, History
Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams
    Tom McCarthy

It's more than just a story. The actors fit the characters' shoes so well, their passion's almost palpable. The story flows with ease. It's amazing how the movie manages to be emotionally-loaded but just enough that it's not inundated.

The sets are excellent. The momentum isn't that consistent but it pulls through.
