Set in 1600 Japan, at the brink of a monumental civil war, “Shōgun” adapts James Clavell’s bestselling novel into a gripping narrative. Hiroyuki Sanada leads as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga,” battling existential threats from the Council of Regents. An unexpected ally arrives in the form of “John Blackthorne” (Cosmo Jarvis), an English pilot with secrets that could shift the power balance. The lives of Toranaga and Blackthorne intertwine with “Toda Mariko” (Anna Sawai), a Christian noblewoman and translator, torn between her faith, duty, and new alliances.

Shōgun” boasts a predominantly Japanese cast, a pioneering move for an American series. Key players include Tadanobu Asano as “Kashigi Yabushige,” Hiroto Kanai as “Kashigi Omi,” Takehiro Hira as “Ishido Kazunari,” Moeka Hoshi as “Usami Fuji,” and more, each bringing depth to this multifaceted saga.
