Today, Facebook introduced a new Android app called Facebook Lite which is like the ordinary app but only uses less data and works well even on slow internet connection.
"In many areas, networks can be slow and not able to support all the functionality found in Facebook for Android. Facebook Lite was built for these situations, giving people a reliable Facebook experience when bandwidth is at a minimum," according to Vijay Shankar, Product Manager for Facebook Lite.
The app is less than 1MB which means it is fast to install and quick to load. It doesn't give all the functionalilty of the full-blown Facebook app but the Lite version lets you scroll through the News Feed, post status updates, upload photos and check notifications.
Facebook quietly launched the app in January, offering it in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria and Vietnam. Now, Facebook Lite will begin its roll-out with a few countries in Asia, and will expand to Latin America, Africa and Europe in the coming weeks.
