The Story
Cotton & Canvas started around two years ago when husband and wife Ronald and Chicky Cabunagan met the deaf workers of the DSWD Rehabilitation Sheltered Workshop. Since the organization was looking for projects for its workers, Ronald and Chicky suggested that they sew placemats to help them earn.
“Being a home-based business, we were able to continue our operation during the quarantine except for deliveries which resumed when the lockdown was eased,” Ronald said when asked about what it’s like to operate despite the pandemic. “Though the sales were good, doing business is a big challenge because the workers need to work from home yet not all of them have their own sewing machines.”
The Specialty
Cotton & Canvas currently has two main products – pocket placemats with pockets on the side for utensils and table runners which could make any dining table look more fun and presentable. These, Ronald said, were most ideal for them to produce as it’s easy for the PWDs to sew. These items can also be both beautiful and functional especially when using the right kind of fabric.
Ronald added that they were lucky to be thriving in the pandemic, with all the people deciding to make their dining tables look fancier. Since they have to stay and eat at home all the time, more people look for table decors to make their dining experiences fun in every meal.
