Tomorrowland is a themed land in Disneyland, right? So to me, the notion of actually turning it into this whole new "otherworld" is completely sublime. Unfortunatunately, I felt that the trailer promised more than the movie was actually able to deliver. Don't get me wrong, Tomorrowland is and will be a good kids' movie now and for years to come. I enjoyed it immensely. It gets a solid 3.5 rating, for sure. But I feel like it needed to show more darkness in order to highlight the positivity of its powerful moral lesson. The problem was that the movie was too hell-bent on sticking to its children's movie category. The plot of a truly epic movie (or even a novel) was there. I mean, they were able to sign on Clooney, for chrissakes. But they didn't push the boundaries, or they were too afraid to do so for fear of going overboard with the themes in the movie. I feel like they could've gone a little deeper, that there are ways to push the envelope without turning it NC-17 or whatever. It could've otherwise been a great family movie instead. After all, no kid below 8 is going to understand what was going on in the movie anyway. Just think: a girl, as if by fate, finds an out-of-this-world object that suddenly catapults her life into a deadly chase, while in pursuit of a world that may or may not be real. Wouldn't that be a great adventure to watch? This fear to go beyond what was expected hindered the movie from offering something more than surface-level enjoyment. It's good, sure. The actors gave good performances. The special effects were great. It just... could've been better, is all. - iamnotfrodo
