About the Event

Silverlens is pleased to share Calle Wrigh's fourth exhibition, Underbelly by Nap Jamir II, Robin Rivera, and Tapio Snellman. This exhibition is an examination into the unseen and the unnoticed. It is the soft side of an animal, something tucked away, sometimes sinister, and ultimately, hidden from sight.

Underbelly

Coming together from different practices, Nap Jamir II, Robin Rivera, and Tapio Snellman create works that highlight the vulnerable and hidden. Taking cues from the neighborhood and architecture, Underbelly takes strides between both the illusionary and palpable. Jamir, Rivera, and Snellman echo what is visible to expose the overlooked and unexamined.

Previous exhibitions at Calle Wright have been opportunities for artists to react to its architecture as a site. Continuing from this, Underbelly is prompted by the space’s architectural elements, yet is also an acknowledgement of impermanence and the persistence of change and weathering. In the end, we will only be left with traces of what was — a whisper of false memories or a past life.

Jamir, Rivera, and Snellman work across photography, sound, and video. Underbelly is the intersection of these mediums; a nudge that reverberates across the space and its surroundings. Through photography, Jamir reveals underlying levels of depth not only present in the image, but what lies behind it. Rivera’s sound installation, Wash, is a nod to the often neglected nuances of the cymbal, calling to our attention what comes after the loud crash of metal. Snellman’s videos are observations into Malate and its position in a swiftly developing and changing city.

Jamir, Rivera, and Snellman were invited by Judy Freya Sibayan, who has previously exhibited in Calle Wright. Their participation is a part of Calle Wright’s continuous programming, where future exhibiting artists are selected by those previously exhibited in the space.

Underbelly is open to the public from 22 March to 23 June 2019 at Calle Wright, 1890 Vasquez St., Malate, Manila. Viewing hours are from 12nn-7pm, Friday to Sunday. For inquiries, contact info@callewright.com or +63917-587-4011.
