Lil Padilla-Sumayao is today’s typical young mom in the time of quarantine. And like most moms, she’s used the time to create something good in the midst of the pandemic. In her case, she’s chosen to make bagels.
Her reason, like her baked good, was simple: “We like them. And our three kids like themā¦ a lot. When we found out we always had a shortage of bagels in the freezer, that’s when we started to think about selling them.”
As to the name, Bagel Brats, Lil states. “We’ve got three amazingly energetic kids. I’ll leave it at that. Haha!” Bagel Brats are chewy on the inside with a satisfying crunch on the outside, especially when lightly toasted. Instead of full sized bagels, Bagel Brats are mini bagels (about 3 inches in diameter),
which makes for a lighter snacking experience.
The bagel making process, on the other hand, isn’t so light. “It takes over two days to make our bagels. We ferment them, boil them and roll them by hand. It’s a lot like raising three kids. It takes a lot of patience, work and prayer. And if you did it right, you should end up with something good.” It just goes to show that a lot of good can come out of being a brat.
