Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival

Sinag Maynila is the country’s newest independent film festival that showcases quality and thought-provoking movies from young, non-mainstream Filipino filmmakers. 

The films are scheduled for screening on rotation basis daily from April 21 to 26, 2016 in a designated SM Cinema in SM Megamall, SM North Edsa, SM Manila, SM Mall of Asia and in SM Aura Premier, where the red-carpet opening ceremonies will be held.

The Pillowman

After the brief festival run of its productions, Maniacal (Fringe Manila 2015) and Schism (Fringe Manila 2016), Egg Theater Company presents its first full-run production with a Filipino Translation of Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman.

The Pillowman is a dark comedy that boldly exhibits the riveting power of narrative and how storytelling and invention of fantastical tales is a basic human instinct. With the coming elections and the incessant specter of dictatorships and martial law, this production resonates with its exploration of the fine line between the freedom of an individual to tell a story and its impact on the security of society.

Stepping Out: The Musical concerns eight individuals from disparate backgrounds and with differing motivations who attend the same weekly tap dancing class in a dingy church hall. Despite the students at first treating the classes as social occasions, and showing little co-ordination, they later develop a level of skill and cohesiveness. The dance routines are the background for the focus of the play, the relationship, and interaction of different people.

The World Street Food Congress 2016: The Comforting Flavors of Home

The world’s oldest and grandest street food culture arose from an era where opportunities were rare; folks trying their level best to make ends meet had to hawk their heritage and often ingenious recipes on the streets to eke out a living. Over the decades and centuries, these dishes have become iconic and beloved by the masses. The majority in such cities rely on these comfort heritage street foods today and it has become a big part of the culinary culture of the land.

The World Street Food Jamboree (April 20th – 24th at Federacion Drive and 9th Avenue, BGC) featuring up to 24 hawkers from around the world that will be setting up their stalls and offering unique and iconic street food fare. Our People: An Exhibit Featuring the Works of Solenn Heussaff

Filipina-French actress, model, and artist Solenn Heussaff will premiere “Our People” at the Pineapple Lab, a solo painting exhibition inspired by Solenn and her family's travels around the world.

At the age of 3, Solenn started formal painting lessons until she turned 18. She has continued to hone her craft since then and has always found solitude in the process. 

In addition to her paintings, Pineapple Lab will have a preview of Solenn's future design projects and collaborations. Her embroidered cowhide carpet collection will be on display in collaboration with Our Tribe, a Filipino company established in 1972 and has made a name in manufacturing quality leather products.

Words Anonymous' 2nd Anniversary Show "Two"

Words Anonymous is a spoken word group formed in 2014 by friends brought together by their love of spoken word and a longing to be heard and understood, with a goal to share their passion for spoken word poetry with the rest of the country.

Through their performances, they weave tales of love, loss, inequality, and the struggles of finding one’s place in the world. They also aim to promote all forms of creative expression through collaborations with other artists and organizations, like Metro Manila Pride, UN Women, SipatLawin Ensemble, and local bands and musicians like Sud, Jensen and The Flips, Reese Lansangan, Aleph, and others.

Dia del Libro (International Book Day)
April 23 (Ayala Triangle, Makati)

Every April 23, Instituto Cervantes, the cultural arm of the Embassy of Spain, will once again be abuzz with cultural and fun activities to celebrate the Día del Libro or the International Book Day.

First introduced in Manila by Instituto Cervantes in 2006, the tradition of Día del Libro began in Barcelona, Spain. To the present, the tradition is commemorated on St. George’s Day (23 April), during which men and women exchange roses and books. This date also honors the deaths of two of history’s greatest writers – Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare – who coincidentally died on the same day, April 23, 1616.

Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang

Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, PETA’s longest running play, is a children’s musical that features three stories from Severino Reyes’ iconic Lola Basyang collection.

Lola Basyang is a mythical character created by Reyes, a major figure in Philippine Literature and also known as the Father of Zarzuela. This is our version of the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Andersen stories.
