Cookies are flat 'little cakes' (cookie comes from the Dutch word koekie which translates to that!) that are baked soft, chewy gooey, or are crumbly and crisp; it can come in many kinds of textures and flavors so cookies remain fun treats to eat. Its beginnings are traced to cakes, actually — they were the small test pieces from cake batter.
Cookies can be as simple and classic as a butter and sugar combo, or the all-time favorite chocolate chip.
