About the Event

An icon’s legacy is often timeless. And Frida Kahlo de Rivera, is without a doubt, an icon whose impact will be felt for generations to come. The Mexican painter is best known for her self-portraits. But her work has also been celebrated in Mexico for strengthening the country’s national identity and internationally by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.

It has been more than 60 years since Frida passed and yet many of the challenges that faced the iconic artist is still present in society today especially in the area of women’s rights.

So Blue House: Philippines is an homage to Frida and her everlasting legacy while still looking forward to the future to fight that same fight that Frida was passionate about. The show will feature original artworks that are inspired by the painter and her body of work. The show will feature local artists such as Anjo Bolarda, Elaine Bobadilla, Ren Quinio and Dee Jae Paeste and will be held at the Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery in Manila.

Blue House was Frida’s home in Mexico City, where she began and ended her life. And Blue House: Philippines is a way to honour that legacy, while paving the way for future artists to further leave a mark on the world just like Frida.

Spearheading Blue House: Philippines is Angelina Lourdes, an independent creative from Singapore. What inspired her to organize and curate this exhibition was her recent well received project ‘Dia De Muertos Singapore’, Singapore’s first and largest Mexican Day of the Dead celebration last year that featured a Frida Kahlo art exhibition component.

Said Angelina: “When I was working on the Day of the Dead celebration in Singapore last year, I had mentioned the Frida exhibition component to my friend Anjo Bolarda who is an artist in Manila. He felt like it was something that would resonate well with a Filipino audience as well.

She added: “It’s pretty amazing to see how art expressed through a central theme

transcends so many boundaries and it’s humbling to be a witness to all these different amazing perspectives of a unified subject matter. Hopefully in time, this show could be a travelling one, who knows!”
