Netflix to Produce ‘One Piece’ Live-Action Series!

The well-loved manga and anime franchise is getting a live-action treatment from Netflix!

Netflix is braving the seas of a huge fandom as they step forward to turn One Piece into a live-action series!

The streaming giant has partnered with Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha to turn one of the bestselling manga series into a 10-episode Netflix series. The long-running pirate adventure tale written by Eiichiro Oda has sold over 460 million copies since its first release in 1997, and even won Oda a Guinness World Record title in 2015 for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author. The anime adaptation of the manga started in 1999, and today the on-going anime series is watched by fans from all over the world.

One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy who, as a young kid, was inspired by a kind yet powerful pirate named Shanks. Because of his age, Shanks didn't let Luffy join his crew as they set sail for their next adventure. Years later, Luffy would sail on his own and gather his own pirate crew, aiming to find the famed treasure "One Piece" and proclaim himself the King of the Pirates.

The upcoming Netflix series will be helmed by writer and showrunner Steven Maeda, whose filmography includes series like Lost, The X Files, and CSI: Miami. Maeda will also be executive producing alongside Matt Owens, Tomorrow Studios' Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, and the manga series' creator Eiichiro Oda. Further details for the show are yet to be revealed.
