Based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, Disney-Pixar's Coco is directed by Unkrich, and is co-directed and co-written by Adrian Molina. The animated film is based on the popular Mexican holiday Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead. To make the film accurate and authentic, the team even went on research trips to different Mexican cities.
Coco follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy who finds himself in the colorful Land of the Dead following a series of events. While on his journey to find his dead relatives, he comes across Héctor, a down-on-his-luck skeleton who promises to help the little boy with his mission, for a favor. Miguel then discovers a century-old mystery, leading to an extraordinary family reunion.
