Johnny Depp plays a ruthless colonel in the upcoming film, Waiting for the Barbarians. The film’s official trailer has been released and it teases yet another promising role for Depp, acting as an antagonist opposite a nameless magistrate played by Mark Rylance.

“The Magistrate of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of Colonel Joll, whose task it is to report on the activities of the ābarbariansā and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations, which leads the Magistrate to question his loyalty to the empire.”
The film is based on J.M. Coetzeeās 1980 novel of the same name. It is directed by Colombian filmmakerĀ Ciro Guerra and also stars Robert Pattinson, Gana Bayarsaikhan, and Greta Scacchi.
