Released in late 2018, the film is about Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales who was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained extraordinary abilities similar to his hometown superhero, Spider-Man. After Spider-Man was defeated by the Kingpin, a huge responsibility fell onto Miles' shoulders: he has to stop the villain's dimension-crossing super-collider before it breaks the multiverse. Fortunately, other variations of Spider-Man are on his side, including Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Peni Parker, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir.
The film was well-received, and besides Miles Morales' Spider-Man, the other Spider-men and women… and pig, were also quick to gain popularity. It won the 'Best Animated Feature' at the 91st Academy Awards, 46th Annie Awards, as well as the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
Besides this upcoming sequel, Sony had earlier announced that a female-centric Spider-Verse spinoff is also in the works. Live-action Spider-Man spinoff Venom is also getting a sequel while Morbius is getting its first film starring Jared Leto.
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, and it starred the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfield, Mahershala Ali, and Nicolas Cage to name a few.
