A musical based on the book Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Chernow, Hamilton tells the story of a bastard orphan who soon became one of America's Founding Fathers. It chronicles his life as George Washington's right-hand man, as a war hero, as a husband, and as the country's Treasury head.
Hamilton features music that draws heavily on hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It has also been known for its cast composed of mostly non-white actors portraying the roles of the Founding Fathers and other historical figures as its way of telling the story of "America then, as told by America now".
With music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show is directed by Thomas Kail and features choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. It stars Miranda as the titular character alongside Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos, and more.
The musical received 16 nominations at the Tony Awards when it opened in 2015, winning 11 of them, including Best Musical.
