A few years ago, noontime television was bombarded with what was probably the grandest and most talked-about soap opera parody on Philippine television. Kalyeserye became the catalyst in launching the careers of the immensely popular Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards, more commonly known as AlDub.
But Kalyeserye spawned more stars than the show expected. It also created three “new” showbiz personas that Philippine television industry will forever remember—the “de Explorer triplets” of Kalyeserye. Lola Nidora, Lola Tinidora, and Lola Tidora instantly became household names in spite of the unbelievably funny names and characters they play on television.
In the same series on Eat Bulaga, the narrative which had a huge following even on social media also gave birth to new characters such as the Rogelios or Lola Nidora’s bodyguards, Bae-by Baste or Alden’s mini version, Charmaine who acted as Alden and Maine’s daughter. These plus a host of other actors made Kalyserye one of the highest rating and longest running segments in the history of noontime television.
After Kalyeserye, life was never the same for the Lolas. They even had a TV commercial for a famous fast food chain. But hard work is one of the virtues these grannies so nurture that they even managed to squeeze in time for a daily talk show called “The Lolas’ Beautiful Show” which airs just before Eat Bulaga.
In “The Lolas’ Beautiful Show,” Lola Tinidora said she has a surprise for everyone. People were clueless, but were somehow certain that this is no ordinary surprise. This one is going to be HUGE and CRAZY. True enough, a film teaser was launched on television and the characters were no less than Lola Nidora, Lola Tinidora, and Lola Tidora. But it was a bit different from the daylights of Kalyeserye. At the same time, it showed a different side of the de Explorer triplets. They were holding weapons, in a fighting pose, and calling their “apo” as if the little Charmaine was in danger.
What are the three Lolas up to this time? A movie is surely in the offing. And what kind? If they were able to pull off one hilarious TV segment and currently host a TV show, then the film will definitely be a promise of laughter for everyone.
