WATCH: Jordan Peele & Nia DaCosta Talk About the ‘Candyman’ Urban Legend in New Featurette

The hook-handed killer returns to the big screen this August!

A new featurette has been revealed for the upcoming horror film Candyman! In the one-minute video, producer Jordan Peele and director Nia DaCosta talk about the urban legend of Candyman and how important it is to be told from a black perspective.

Watch the featurette below:

Candyman is a spiritual sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, which was based on Clive Barker’s short story, ‘The Forbidden.’ Set a decade after the last of the Cabrini Towers were torn down, the upcoming film follows the visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend Brianna who have just moved into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini.

After experiencing an artist’s block in his career, Anthony obsesses over the local urban legend of Candyman and makes the hook-handed boogeyman the latest subject for his art. But this obsession will plunge him into a rabbit hole that opens a door to his past and unravels his own sanity.

As Peele and DaCosta have teased in the featurette, we can expect the new Candyman film to also include social commentaries on race and violence. Peele has also been known for tackling social issues with his films Get Out and Us. Meanwhile, director Nia DaCosta is also known for directing the thriller Little Woods and the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels.
