Venice Grand Canal to Host First Venice Film Festival in Manila

Eight Italian and three Filipino multi-awarded films will be featured in the world-class Venice Cineplex.

The country’s most romantic mall Venice Grand Canal will be hosting the prestigious Venice Film Festival which will be coming to the Philippines for the very first time. This special edition of the said festival will be a premiere not only for the country, but for the entire Southeast Asian region as well.

From July 26 to 31, eight Italian and three Filipino multi-awarded films will be featured in the world-class Venice Cineplex. Topping the list of featured films is Lav Diaz’s black and white revenge tale “Ang Babaeng Humayo.” The film, starring Charo Santos-Concio, won the Golden Lion prize for best picture in the 2016 edition of the film festival.

Internationally-acclaimed Filipino films namely Thy Womb by Brillante Mendoza, Jay by Francis Xavier Pasion are also among the films set to be screened in the Venice Cineplex.

Completing the list of featured films are Italian films Questi Giorni, Piuma, Tommaso, Liberami, L’estate Addosso, Orecchie, Processo Alla Citta and Profumo Di Donna.

The films selection is a combination of classic and recent releases which have been imprinted in the history of filmmaking. Four screenings will be offered to the public every day. The first two screenings will be available free of charge, while the other two will be for a limited price of P50 per person.

Guests will also be treated with a photo exhibit from July 25 to 31 at the Rialto Bridge lobby, detailing the history of the Venice Film Festival and the notable movies that have been part of it.

This event, organized in the framework of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Italy and the Philippines, aims to bring internationally-acclaimed movies and a world-renowned film festival closer to Filipinos in a captivating Venetian setting.

Founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world. It is also considered to be one of the major film festivals alongside Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.

The festival is part of the Venice Biennale, which was founded by the Venetian City Council in 1895. Today, the Biennale includes different events including music, theatre, and dance festivals, and exhibits for arts and architecture.
