Infinity Stones: Where are They Now and Why are They So Important to Thanos?

We're giving you a quick guide on what you need to know about the sought after stones!

Avengers: Infinity War is finally – and still – showing in cinemas today! The latest – and the biggest – film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film is set two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War and will be bringing together The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and more in defeating Thanos who is on a mission of stealing the Infinity Stones and put an end to the universe.

If you're one of those who still hasn't seen the film because you're not sure if you'll be able to relate having not seen all the previous films (What even are Infinity Stones, right?!), fret not, because we're giving you a quick guide on what you need to know about the sought after stones!

But first…what are Infinity Stones? Infinity Stones are 6 powerful objects made by the Cosmic Entities which are tied to different aspects of the universe. Each of these stones possesses a unique capability, and it's believed that anyone who will be able to obtain all 6 of them may have the power to destroy everything – yes, the universe, included!

Here are the 6 stones and what they're all about:

Tesseract – The Space Stone
First seen in: Captain America: The First Avenger

Contained in a blue cube called The Tesseract, the Space Stone gives its owner a control over space. It enables them to open portals and bridges from one end of the universe to another, making it something that would get Thanos to easily access different realms.

The stone was last seen towards the end of Thor: Ragnarok,  where it was suggested that Loki saw the Tesseract from the vault in Asgard and he took it for himself.

First seen in: The Avengers

The Mind Stone gives its owner the power to control the minds of others. It was once the orb that gives power to Loki's scepter, so whenever he touches someone with it, he could control them to do whatever he wants. The Avengers was able to recover the scepter in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and they used the stone to create Vision, an android with superhuman strength and the ability to fly, but no ability to control minds.

The Mind Stone was last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron and is currently residing on Vision's forehead.

Eye of Agamotto – The Time Stone
First seen in: Doctor Strange

Whoever gets to own the Time Stone also gets to go back or forward in time. It is also believed to be used by the Ancient Ones to protect the world from mystic threats. The Eye of Agamotto was found by Stephen Strange (later Doctor Stranger) in the library of Kamar-Taj, who later uses it to put Dormammu in a time loop and save the world.

The Time Stone was last seen in a pendant with Doctor Strange who brings it back to Kamar-Taj.

Orb – The Power Stone
First seen in: Guardians of the Galaxy

Anyone who holds the Power Stone gets energy and power that's enough to destroy an entire planet. After accidentally discovering the stone contained in an Orb, it was stolen by Ronan the Accuser from Star Lord and threatens to end the Earth with it.

The Power Stone was last seen with the Nova Corps in Xandar after the Guardians of the Galaxy left it there for safekeeping.

Aether – Reality Stone
First seen in: Thor: The Dark World

The Reality Stone gives its owners the ability to manipulate matter and change reality within a snap of a finger. First seen in Thor: The Dark World, the villain Malekith plans to use Aether to try and put the universe in a state of eternal darkness.

Luckily, the Asgardians stopped the said scheme and decided to give the stone to The Collector from Knowhere so no two Infinity Stones are in the same location (the other one being the Space Stone) at the same time.

Soul Stone

As of the last film before Avengers: Infinity War, people still have no idea on the whereabouts of the Soul Stone, not even what it looks like. However, avid Marvel fans still have their own theories and best guesses as to the possible locations of the missing stone. Some say it's in Wakanda, while some would say that it's back in Thanos' home world, Titan.

Well, now there's only one way to find out, right?
