The Cultural Center of the Philippines kickstarts Kanto Kultura with an online band competition that aims to create a “new Pinoy sound.”
Kanto Kultura is a new project created by the CCP Board of Trustees, with the aid of CCP’s Office of the President. It will run a series of programs that seeks to encourage Filipino talents to create quality content in different forms of artistic expressions, such as music, broadcast and film, literature, theater, dance, and visual arts.
The Search for a New Pinoy Sound
To put things into motion, Kanto Kultura begins with Kanto Canta, a songwriting and singing competition that calls for local talents out there to create new songs and new music that use indigenous musical instruments. Entries that are in Filipino, any native Philippine language, or a mix of both will be accepted, and the top 15 will win P150,000 worth of prizes plus local and international opportunities.
It is CCP’s way to set a stepping stone for Filipinos to create their music that may eventually match the K-pop phenomena. And since the pandemic displaced numerous artists, this competition also serves as an opportunity for amateur talents and unsigned artists out there.
Kanto Canta is open to natural-born Filipinos who currently reside in the Philippines, 18 years old and above, and with no existing professional and commercial entertainment contracts. The submission period is from February 20 to March 20, and the announcement of Quarter-Finalists is on April 3.
