Filmmaker Kip Oebanda shares insights on the making of Liway, the runaway hit at the Cinemalaya film festival, in the October 21 episode of Art 2 Art.
Now enjoying a theatrical run, Liway is based on Oebanda’s personal story being born to rebel detainees and spending his early childhood in prison in the tail-end of the Martial Law years.
As co-writer and director of the film, Oebanda says Liway was something he felt compelled to do not as a political pitch but to share a human story. “The power of storytelling is in getting people to empathize even if their beliefs are different from yours,” he notes.

They also discuss Ballet Manila’s upcoming full-length pirate adventure Le Corsaire where they make their respective debuts as Medora and Gulnara.
On October 28, arts educator, cultural programmer and visual artist Jill Soberano-Samodio discusses the challenges of engaging young people to become life-long art patrons. The director of De La Salle University’s Culture and Arts Office also shares the findings of her recent research on the creative workforce in the Philippines and the continuing efforts to address common concerns among artists.
