Bronuts: The Heavy Duty Croughnut

The croughnut fever is far from over! The people behind Bronuts, who call themselves 'bros,' recently opened two branches—one at SM Aura's Food on Four and another one at Century City Mall.

Hey, food-loving Pinoys, don't start on those cookie shot glasses yet, because the croughnut fever is far from over. The people behind Bronuts, who call themselves “bros,” recently opened two branches—one at SM Aura's Food on Four and another one at Century City Mall. This is a big leap from their booth at Baker's Dozen in Rockwell, which only appeared during the weekends.

They developed such a supportive fan base, that people were deliberately dropping by Rockwell just to visit their kiosk due to word-of-mouth recommendations. Thankfully, the bros have now bestowed upon us the gift of enjoying a freshly-made bronut anytime of the week, much to the satisfaction of our cravings.

Yep, they're huge. The macho croughnut, if you will.

They come in 8 different flavors, all in the same gargantuan size, and priced at P110 each or P600 for a box of 6. Amongst the eight, there are two savory flavors available: the Super Floss, which is a spicy, pork floss croughnut, and the Cream Cheese & Bacon, which is ladled with thick cream cheese and bits of bacon in between.

Super Floss

The Cream Cheese & Bacon is a favorite because its thick herb cream cheese spread is fantastic with the layers of buttery pastry. Add bacon bits to that and you get a scrumptious croughnut unlike any other.

For the other flavors, which are sweet and decadent enough to be desserts, there are two fruity choices: the Blueberries & Cream and Strawberry Yogurt.

The Blueberries & Cream is a striking lavender dotted with sugar crystals on top, making it gritty to the bite. In between its flaky layers is blueberry compote and custard filling that provides the irresistible sweet and sour combination.

A pastel pink frosting tops the Strawberry Yogurt, and pink sugar crystals glisten on top of it. The flavor is slightly tangy and sweet, with just the right balance of yogurt and cream.

Then, there are the chocolate-flavored bronuts. The Belgian Chocolate with Salted Caramel is an easy favorite because, hey, it's Belgian chocolate. The top is smothered with dark chocolate, toffee crunch and salted caramel. Inside, you will find more salted caramel filling, which just makes this croughnut my top pick amongst the sweet ones.

Another chocolate croughnut is the PMS, which is curious looking because of its red base. I'm not quite sure if it's called PMS because of its color or its ability to diminish PMS symptoms by the power of its sheer deliciousness. I guess we'll go with the latter.

PMS

The PMS has a cream cheese filling and is topped with melted Toblerone and a wedge of Toblerone. It's not red velvet croughnut, as other people seem to think so, but a more decadent and chocolate-y flavor, owing to its generous Toblerone topping.

Pylones

Then, there's the Pylones, which is one of the newer flavors. It sandwiches strawberry jam and buttercream filling in the middle and has white chocolate frosting and dark chocolate shavings on top.

Bronuts' newest flavor is Hijo de Leche, which is pretty much like an upgraded ensaymada. It is topped with grated cheese and filled with dulce de leche in between. It is compact and hefty, and begging to be shared because of its sheer decadence.

Bronuts does a wonderful job of showing their customers what goes on into their croughnut by having a kiosk encased in see-through panels. Mere passersby turn into first time buyers at the sight of the beautiful croughnuts being prepared, and then displayed on the counter. 'Tis a lovely sight to behold, indeed. The day Bronuts opened to the public at SM Aura, I saw curious onlookers and loyal customers all crowding around the kiosk, and kids pressing their noses against the glass. If that's any indication, I'd say the croughnut craze is just starting to gain a steadier footing in Manila and Bronuts is leading it with one macho step after another.
