About the Event

Ricco Renzo Gallery presents 'Legends and Villains 3' at the SM Mall of Asia, Main Atrium, which opens on August 26 and runs until August 28.

Participating artists are: Sam Penaso, Mans Gonzales, Ronna Lara-Bes, Thomas D. Daquioag, Janos Delacruz, Jojo Ramirez, Norlie Meimban, Patrick Meimban, Mark Joseph Bello, Marco Banares, Philip Brondial, Fernando E. Antimano, Eman Santos, Nelson O. Ricahuerta, Patrician Tan, Xander Calceta, Aldron Anchiges, John Perry Pellejeria, Jim Orencio, Paul David Magisa, Roen Capule, Joseph Balderas, Grandier Gil Bella, Rodel Omampo, Edu S. Perrera, Michael Tutaan, and Iya Calamlam.

Among the classic Pop figures and characters depicted by the artists are: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Iceman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Ultron, Ghost Rider, Darth Vader, The Black Widow, Magneto, Hugo Strange, Venom, The Joker, The Incredible Hulk, and Wolverine. In their own individual styles, the artists will bring these well-loved comics characters to life, proving their universal appeal across all ages and generations.

Art critic Reuben Ramas Canmete writes: “Legends and Villains marks a unique space that both glamorizes the popular, and at the same time, makes us think about the way we accept or define the parameters of that popular-ness. These works also signify that for all the hoopla and self-congratulations that may result from a hegemonic popular culture as resulting from a monopoly of images and ideas, Filipinos are capable of seeing through the visage of the modernist hero/villain dyad as a symptom of what is really wrong with the world – an ability to rethink, and thus resist, the given, and postulate in its stead the unexpected. Perhaps in that attempt at questioning, we have found the value of art as a tool for transformation as much as it is now an instrument of edification.”

Partners are SM Mall of Asia, Flipgeeks, When In Manila and Manila Bulletin.

On August 29, Legends and Villains transfers to Ricco Renzo Gallery for an extended run. Ricco Renzo Gallery, also a premier source of custom-made materials and furnishings for the architectural and interior design industry, is at the LRI Design Plaza, 210 N.
