Breaking Out: 5 Things You Need To Know about ‘Escape Plan 2’

Before the anticipated sequel premieres in cinemas, here are some of the things you must know about 'Escape Plan 2: Hades.'

Anyone who's ever been a fan of jailbreak films would surely be excited as Escape Plan 2: Hades finally opens this month!

Directed by Steven C. Miller, the film brings back Sylvester Stallone as Ray Breslin, who manages a group of security specialists trained to break people out of the most impenetrable prisons. When Shu Ren, his trusted agent, goes missing inside a techno-terror battle maze called Hades, Breslin goes back to a secret lock-up to save his friend.

Here are 5 things to know about Escape Plan 2: Hades before it opens this month:

1. It's the sequel to Escape Plan which premiered in 2013.

Directed by Mikael Håfström, the 2013 film centers on a character named Ray Breslin who gets double-crossed in a prison he designed himself. He must then work with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Emil Rottmayer in plotting his way to break out of prison and in finding the person who wants him locked up in it.

Joining Stallone and Schwarzenegger in the film are Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Sam Neill, Vinnie Jones, Caitriona Balfe, and more.

2. It's set to take an entirely different route from the first film, and a major character won't be coming back for the sequel.

Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be returning for Escape Plan 2, and instead, Breslin is teaming up with Trent DeRasa, played by Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista.

In one of the interviews that he had last year, Dave Bautista spilled that Escape Plan 2: Hades will be completely different from the first film, especially when it comes to its vibe. "I am no Arnold Schwarzenegger, but then again, I am no Arnold Schwarzenegger," he said, so the audience may expect a different kind of chemistry – a good one – between him and Sylvester Stallone.

3. It will also be including new characters to watch out for!

In an Instagram video posted by Stallone himself, he teases about a certain "friend" to watch out for (aside from Dave Bautista and Jesse Metcalfe), before panning the camera to a "tough" looking robot from behind them. As to what this robot will be doing in the film is something fans would have to watch out and be excited for!

Joining the sequel's cast from the ones already mentioned include Chinese actor Xiaoming Huang, Jaime King,  Jesse Metcalfe, Wes Chatham, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, and UFC Champion Tyron Woodley.

4. The sequel will also be centering on a new, more elaborate prison.

If the first film centered on the Tomb, the sequel will be taking its audience to Hades, which is also known as the Land of the Dead. It's said to be the most elaborate prison to have been built, as it's entirely computerized and its interiors constantly change in shape.

And considering another one of Stallone's Instagram posts, audience may also expect that Breslin will encounter more of them in this semi-futuristic place.

5. An Escape Plan 3 is already in the works!

It was announced back in April 2017 that Stallone has already signed to reprise his role for a third film. The sequel, entitled Escape Plan 3: Devil's Station, is already in production and it will also be bringing back Trent DeRosa who will be helping Breslin break out one of their team members out of a penitentiary called "Devil's Station."

Escape Plan 2: Hades, distributed by Pioneer Films, opens in Philippine cinemas this month. You may check out the screening schedule here
