    The Room (2020)

    R-13 Drama, Mystery, Sci-fi
    Cast
Olga Kurylenko, Kevin Janssens, Joshua Wilson
    Director
    Christian Volckman

"The Room" is nothing I expected as it got a unique promising concept. I've only know Olga Kurylenko as the lovely leading lady of James Bond and Johnny English, but here she's looked older with a bad case of acting and audience disconnect. Hahah. Really hard to empathize with them due to poor character development. Di ko alam pano i-categorize to sa genre: horror drama, mystery-fantasy? Ganun sya kagulo. Hahah! Think of the Twilight Zone, interestingly strange.

    The Invisible Man (2020)

    R-13 Horror, Sci-fi, Thriller
    Cast
Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Aldis Hodge
    Director
    Leigh Whannell

"The Invisible Man" is an edge of your seat psychological thriller from horror productions Blumhouse, and I have to say they got another winner with this one. Sa opening scene pa lang, it effectively engages you into the tension that's building up. The musical scoring adds to the suspense, actually kahit walang music, like the quiet suspense is extreme. Could've given this a 10 but the third act had logic issues and I don't like the suit glitch coz the tormentor looks cheap. Hahah. The trailer screams "Hollowman" meets "Enough", domestic violence with a sci-fi twist, but that surprise in the e... Read more

    Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

    PG Action, Adventure, Animation
    Cast
    Ben Schwartz
    Director
    Jeff Fowler

"Sonic The Hedgehog" is a nostalgic and fast-paced, ehem, decent family flick. It's not perfect but I did enjoy it! I'm really glad that they listened to the fans putting an effort to postpone and redesign the horrible animation. I liked how they put some game references within the gasgas na plot. Jim Carrey, annoying as always is agaw eksena. Hahah! That bar brawl scene though has been done already by Flash and Quicksilver but still looked fun and awesome. There are 2 bonus scenes by the "Tails"-end of the movie that will excite fans.

    Ashfall (2020)

    PG Action, Drama
    Cast
    Byung-hun Lee, Jung-woo Ha, Hye-jin Jeon
    Director
    Byung-seo Kim, Hae-jun Lee

"Ashfall" is a blockbuster Korean movie with spectacular catastrophic set pieces. I think one thing they had an edge over big budgeted Hollywood films is that they successfully deliver the dramatic and emotional angles in "disaster" films. The con: subplots and the multi-genre takes away the momentum. Fist 10 minutes aksyon agad very San Andreas, then becomes a political drama, tapos action heist stealing a nuke from North Korea, comedic moments fell flat until babawi by the climactic last 30 minutes. In fairness K-pop star Bae Su-zy has cinematic moments as the pregnant wife but it's the brom... Read more

    Birds of Prey (2020)

    R-16 Action, Adventure, Crime
    Cast
Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
    Director
    Cathy Yan

Saw "Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn" (whew!) last night and surprisingly I liked it better than the Suicide Squad. This is actually the first of 3 movies this year featuring a female lead from a comic book by a female director (Hello, Wonder Woman and Black Widow!). The spin-off had a stylized psychedelic visuals as cool and colorful as Harley's lunatic lifestyle and Margot Robbie gave a 100% fantabulous performance. Looks like she had a lot of fun doin' this especially on that Police Station and Amusement Mile sequences. Medyo nakulangan lang ako kay Black... Read more

    Bad Boys for Life (2020)

    Action, Comedy, Crime
    Cast
    Will Smith, Martin Lawrence
    Director
    Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah

Oh man, I honestly feel so old watching this sequel, 25 years after the original and the great chemistry between the cast's still there though it's not Michael Bay directing this anymore. Not surprised why it remained 3 weeks on top of the US Box Office (dethroned last week by Birds Of Prey) as it got a good mix of comedy, suspense, action and drama. Mabilis lang yung two hours at hindi ka mabibitin sa aksyon. I particularly liked that tricycle chase and the explosive finale. Yung twist na pang teleserye..hmmm not so much. Hahah! Obviously may pa-Part 4 ito.

    1917 (2020)

    PG Drama, War
    Cast
George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Benedict Cumberbatch
    Director
    Sam Mendes

"1917" will probably hakot awards tomorrow at the Oscars. It's just genius! I've always been a fan of intense war films at grabe siguro yung dusa nila habang ginagawa 'to. So the whole 2-hour movie was made to look like it's just done in a single take na may pagka-real time so it keeps you engaged the whole period and I've never felt so focused and immersed watching the horrors of war. Probably the most brilliant camera work and editing done in one movie, abangers talaga ako kelan nila i-cut yung sequence. Hahah! Apakasimple lang ng kwento, just stop thinking how randomly lucky the main protag... Read more

    Spies in Disguise (2019)

    Action, Adventure, Animation
    Cast
    Tom Holland, Will Smith
    Director
    Nick Bruno, Troy Quane

Blue Sky Animations finally has something new to offer other than the Ice Age series. This movie really made me laugh...a lot! Even forgot that this is a kids movie as it had a lot of epic non-stop action which appeals more to the older audience. Got a good balance of seriousness and silliness with a 007-ish soundtrack and plot. The awkward nerd Walter played by Tom Holland feels just like an animated Peter Parker while Will Smith expectedly delivers the swag as Lance. Syempre, may pa-moral of the story: violence isn't always an option and you do not just fight fire with fire. Definitely has a... Read more

    The Grudge (2020)

    R-13 Horror
    Cast
Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, Lin Shaye
    Director
    Nicolas Pesce

I remember watching the original Ju-On at SM Fairview right after our High School class and I had sleepless nights remembering those scenes from Kayako, Toshio and that howling cat. 16 years after and they decided to do another remake of an actual remake which will always be compared to the original and I have to say was the weakest of the 3 that I've seen. The movie's a bit of a drag with the slow narrative, got some lousy jump scares, gory but less scary. The timelines may confuse you at first until it makes sense by the third act. What I like best was the acting, good thing they had John Ch... Read more

    Jojo Rabbit (2020)

    R-13 Comedy, Drama, War
    Cast
Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson
    Director
    Taika Waititi

"Jojo Rabbit" is a black comedy showing the atrocities of war, a fresh and wild take on Nazi movies which are always serious. I thought I'm not gonna like this due to its edgy but sensitive subject, well I'm pleasantly surprised as it's a perfect balance of heartwarming and heartbreaking. Few may not appreciate this style of finding humor in tragedy as it will play with your emotions and you won't know what's gonna happen next! I love the bright-coloured palette and the awesome feel-good soundtrack, too! Taika Waititi who also directed "Thor:Ragnarok" plays the hilarious caricature of Adolf Hi... Read more
