Set in 1968 New York City, the film follows a group of nine gay men who gather for a birthday party. Their fun get-together is interrupted when an uninvited guest from the host’s past comes uninvited.
The film is based on the 1968 Off-Broadway play of the same name by Matt Crowley. It became known for depicting the lives and relationships of gay people in a time when homosexuality was still taboo. It had its Broadway revival production in 2018 to celebrate the original production’s 50th anniversary.
The Boys in the Band will be featuring the 2018 revival’s cast. This includes Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Watkins, Brian Hutchison, Robin de Jesus, Charlie Carver, and Michael Benjamin Washington. Joe Mantello, who worked on the stage production, also directed and penned the script for the film.
