Taika Waititi, the director behind Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit is set to bring his distinct directorial style to Netflix by helming two upcoming animated series based on the characters of Roald Dahl.
According to Netflix, they will be releasing the World of Willy Wonka and Oompa-Loompas with Waititi as the writer, director, and executive producer. The first one will be based on the story and characters of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory while the second one will be an original take on Dahl's oompa-loompas, the workers of the Chocolate Factory with weird hairdos.
These two series will be the first step to the extensive partnership between Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company, which are set to reimagine more Roald Dahl stories in the future including Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and more.
“In the words of Willy Wonka himself – we are ‘Delighted! Charmed! Overjoyed!’ with Taika’s appointment on this project. There is something undeniably Wonka-esque about Taika’s creative flair and inimitable sense of humor and we cannot think of anyone more perfectly suited to leading the creative charge on these first of their kind, feature quality Netflix shows,” says Gideon Simeloff, Commercial and Entertainment Director of the Roald Dahl Story Company.
Taika Waititi is fresh from his Oscar win last month. The filmmaker brought home the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film Jojo Rabbit. His follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok titled Thor: Love and Thunder, is also very much anticipated especially for fans of the Marvel film franchise.
Further details for the World of Willy Wonka and Oompa-Loompas are yet to be revealed.
