Benedict Cumberbatch is best known for playing heroic geniuses in pop culture, such as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange. But in Netflix’s upcoming film, The Power of the Dog, it seems that the actor’s latest character is using his cunning for evil.

Set in 1925, The Power of the Dog centers around Phil Burbank, a charismatic and cunning cowboy who likes to torment his sister-in-law and her son. When the cruel man takes the young boy under his wing, he seems to be exposing himself to love… or is this just another one of his sinister plots.
The Power of the Dog also stars Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Frances Conroy, Thomasin McKenzie, Keith Carradine, Adam Beach, and Peter Carroll. It is written and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jane Campion.
The film will start streaming on Netflix this December 1.
