‘The Platform’ on Netflix Should Be Your Next Quarantine Watch

Spoiler alert: the system is broken.

The Story:

The Platform is a science fiction thriller set in a vertical cell-style prison where a platform filled with food gradually descends down from above to feed two prisoners at a time. The system allows them to eat as much as they want, leaving the people below to starve.

Watch this if you:

If you’re into films that have clear and important messages or if you’re up for some brutal imagery and have an hour and a half to kill, then The Platform, while not necessarily chill, is an okay film to watch with friends (from a safe distance) but best to spare the ones with weaker stomachs.

What I think:

The Platform is amazingly brash. It does not hold back on depictions of violence and gore which perfectly matches its very unsubtle messages of inequality and broken systems. Watching this film feels like getting hit with a brick, from its visuals of Marie Antoinette-esque feasts set against bare concrete walls to the literal cannibalism that managed to desensitize me less than 30 minutes in. I like the light sense of camp to it, some of its humor was a good respite from the extreme tension throughout the film (I had to roll my shoulders back more than once).

It's a lot of bold choices stacked on top of one another with the message being yelled as loud and clear as possible, almost quite literally with the film's ultimate thesis being uttered within the first half-hour. Revealing their hand early might have been a detriment to the film's second act, but the film manages to sustain the thrill and suspense either way. While it’s not on the level of Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, I quite enjoyed it, plus the film is competently made with a good cast of actors that’ll keep your mind occupied.

My Rating:

The Platform is now streaming on Netflix. Watch it here.
