WATCH: Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Okja,’ on Netflix soon, Reveals The Super Pig Causing a Stir in Cannes

Despite premiere glitches, the Netflix film about a super pig still received a four-minute standing ovation from its audience.

It’s Cannes Film Festival season once again, and like every year, film buffs are treated with a selection of films of different genres from all around the world.

One of the films that caused quite a stir among its audience on the festival’s 70th year is Bong Joon Ho’s Okja. As the film is a Netflix original set for a premiere on the streaming site, a debate sparked among the jury and French theaters. According to them, the film shouldn’t be eligible for the prestigious Palme D’Or award as it won’t be getting a cinema release in France.

Okja tells the story of a young South Korean Mija, the caretaker and companion of a massive animal named Okja. When a conglomerate takes Okja to New York to promote a project they were going to start, Mija goes on a mission to save and bring her friend home.

The film was booed during its first screening in the festival, when the Netflix logo appeared and when it was accidentally played in the wrong aspect ratio (the festival issued an apology afterward). Despite the glitches, Okja still received a four-minute standing ovation from its audience when it finally rolled its credits.

Okja, which will be available on Netflix starting June 28, will be competing in the Cannes Film Festival alongside films like The Meyerowitz Stories – another Netflix original – Wonderstruck, Happy End, Geu-Hu (The Day After), Aus Dem Nichts (In the Fade), Jupiter’s Moon, and more.
