If you loved how Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series melded the modern world with Greek mythology, then here’s some great news: Tori Tadiar’s upcoming graphic novel series Highsummer is set to be published by Disney Books, the same publisher behind the Percy Jackson series and its spin-offs.
Set in a Filipininana junior high school, Highsummer follows the 12-year-old girl Mika who discovers that she can wake ancient gods and creatures from Philippine mythology, after trying to undo a curse she accidentally inflicted on her two classmates.
Filipina author-illustrator Tori Tadiar is known for her works such as Sagala which features gunslinging women in Filipiniana, and Twinkle Twinkle which follows a pair of twins who work in theater as they try to sell stardust to a mysterious patron. You can preview these titles for free on Penlab.
