Based on the cinematic masterpiece by Ricky Lee, Himala or “miracle” follows the story of a young woman named Elsa who becomes a savior in the eyes of a bucolic town longing to put an end to its suffering. With music & lyrics by Vincent A. DeJesus, and book & lyrics by Ricky Lee, “Himala” broke barriers as one of the most celebrated film-to-stage adaptations in local theater history.
“Himala” or “miracle” is a 1982 cinematic masterpiece by writer Ricky Lee and director Ishmael Bernal which follows the story of a young woman named Elsa (played in the film by Nora Aunor). At the onset, she struggles to find her place in the fictional Barrio Cupang but soon becomes the center of attention after her alleged sighting of the Virgin Mary and her subsequent miraculous works. Elsa becomes a savior in the eyes of this bucolic town longing to put an end to its misery and suffering. Inspired by a true story of girl from Cabra Island, Occidental Mindoro, “Himala” sheds light on the thematic tension between delusion and belief, and religion and blind faith. Thirty-five years later, its message rings true and remains to be one of the finest films ever made in the history of Philippine cinema.
Himala: Isang Musikal, winner of 8 Gawad Buhay Awards (including Best Musical), is directed by Ed Lacson, Jr. (Gawad Buhay Awardee for Best Direction of a Musical & Best Set Design).
