6 Filipino Theater Productions You Can Stream on iWant Starting May 30

The Cultural Center of the Philippines and Tanghalang Pilipino are partnering with iWant to make their productions available for streaming from May 30 to June 30. This is part of their fundraising project Pantawid ng Tanghalan, which aims to help TP in fulfilling its commitment to continue giving excellent productions despite the pandemic.

Lam-ang (2019)

Lam-ang is a musical re-imagining Biag ni Lam-ang, one of the oldest folk epics of Luzon. The musical follows Lam-ang on his conquest and brings to life local traditions and customs that are in danger of disappearing forever. Fitz Edward Torres Bitana and Marco Viana direct the musical, with a book and lyrics by Eljay Daldoc. JC Santos stars as the titular character.

Mabining Mandirigma, a Steampunk Musical (2019)

Mabining Mandirigma is a steampunk musical starring Monique Wilson as Apolinario Mabini. Chris Millado directs this piece written by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson. It tells the story of Apolinario Mabini, and incorporating steampunk as the background to the action-packed production.

Coriolano (2019)

Coriolano is the Filipino staging of the Shakespearean play telling the story of a Roman soldier who becomes a tyrant, an event that leads to his downfall. The play is translated to Filipino by Guelan Luerca and directed by Carlos Siguon-Reyna.

Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-Araw (2016)

Pangarap sa Isang Gabi sa Gitna Ng Tag-araw is another restaging of the Shakesperean classic. The comedy revolves around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolypta. The play is translated by Rolando Tinio, and directed by Carlos Siguion-Reyna.

Der Kaufmann: Ang Negosyante ng Venecia (2013)

Der Kauffman is an adaptation of The Merchant of Venice, with the adaptation by Rody Vera and translation by Rolando Tinio. The production takes Antonio and Shylock in one of history’s darkest days – the Holocaust. Rody Vera and Tuxqs Rutaquio direct this production.

Sandosenang Sapatos (2014)

Sandosenang Sapatos is about the wheelchair-bound girl Susie who wants to fulfill his father’s dream and become a ballerina. Written by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan and adapted for stage by Layeta Bucoy, the production is directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio and stars Trixie Esteban, May Bayot-De Castro, and more.
