Mobile World Congress 2018: Asus ZenFone 5, Samsung Galaxy S9 and more new smartphones

ICYMI, this year's Mobile World Congress, the biggest mobile industry trade show where the world's greatest tech giants unveil their latest devices have just wrapped up. From Asus' ZenFone 5 which eerily looks like the iPhone X to the Nokia 8110 banana phone, here's a list of all the notable phones revealed at the exhibit:


Six budget-friendly phones were announced which is grouped into three series: 5, 3 and 1.

Alcatel 5 Series

The Alcatel 5 sports a bezel-less 5.7-inch Alcatel FullView 18:9 display and is powered by a MediaTek MT6750 octa-core processor. It also has a 12MP rear camera and a dual-front 13MP + 5MP camera. It also has a fingerprint sensor located on the back for conveniently unlocking the phone and doubling as a shutter key when taking selfies. Additionally, you can set up the sensor to launch different apps with just a finger tap. It will be available in metallic black and metallic gold colors at €229.99 (≈P14,594).

Alcatel 3 Series

Just like the Alcatel 5, the 3 series – Alcatel 3, 3V and 3X – have 18:9 ratio screens, SmartCam, Face Key and fingerprint sensors.

The Alcatel 3 sports a 5.5-inch IPS HD+ display and beautiful spectrum glossy finish, available in three colors: Spectrum Black, Blue and Gold. It will be available starting March at €149.99 (≈P9,517).

The Alcatel 3X has a larger 5.7-inch IPS HD+ display, offers more memory and a super wide angle dual rear camera, available in three colors: Metallic Black, Blue and Gold. It will be available starting April at €179.99 (≈P11,422).

The Alcatel 3V offers a 6-inch 2K display combined with a real time bokeh dual real camera and is available in three colors: Spectrum Black, Blue and Gold. It is available in the market now at €189.99 (≈P12,052).

Alcatel 1 Series

The Alcatel 1X is the most affordable in the lineup and has an 18:9 screen. It sports a soft touch finish, 5.3-inch display and rear camera of 16MP. It is also one of the smartphones powered by the latest Android Oreo. It will be available starting April in three colors: Black, Blue and Gold, at €99.99 (≈P6,336).

The Alcatel 1C which is a 3G variant featuring a metal body will be available starting April and available in three colors: Metal Black, Blue and Gold, at €89.99 (≈P5,702).


ZenFone 5Z and ZenFone 5

The ZenFone 5Z is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform while the ZenFone 5 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform. Besides the processors, both the smartphones share identical specs with a 6.2-inch display, a 3,300-mAh battery with quick charging and a dual camera system which adapts and learns, according to the company. Both are available in two colors: Meteor Silver and Midnight Blue, price is yet to be announced.

ZenFone 5 Lite

If you can't stop taking photos, the ZenFone 5 Lite is your best bet! It is a 6-inch smartphone with the world's first four-camera system with at 120-degree wide-angle camera both front and rear. 

Land Rover


Whether it's a ski trip or you're planning to climb a mountain, this Android-based phone built by Builtt will withstand any tough adventures you plan to take. It features a 5” HD display, 16MP rear camera & 8MP front camera, has a 4,000mAh expndable battery and is drop tested to 1.8 meters with a factory fitted screen protector; it can survive underwater including salt water with its IP68 rating. It will be available to order starting April 2018, priced at €649 (≈P41,869).


V30S ThinQ

It is a variant of last year's flagship V30 and is powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. It is equipped with a 6-inch 18:9 display, 16MP rear & 5MP front camera, and has an AI technology which makes visual search easier. It is available in New Maroccan Blue and New Platinum Gray colors, price is yet to be announced. 


8110 4G

Take a trip down memory lane with the updated version of the 20-year-old Nokia phone. It comes with a 2.45-inch display, 1.1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 processor, packs with 4GB internal storage and a 2MP rear camera. It comes in two colors: Black and Yellow.

Nokia 8 Sirocco

Just like its predecessor, the 5.5-inch Nokia 8 Sirocco has a wide angle 12MP dual-lens for the rear camera. With its Pro Camera mode, you can take manually adjust the white balance, focus, ISO, shutter speed and exposure in real time. It is powered by 1.9GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, has a stainless steel design and wireless charging with the ability to charge 50% in 30 minutes.


Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+

The 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 and 6.2-inch S9+ boasts of new cameras that can take photos in different kinds of light with its 12MP rear sensor with optical image stabilization, runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset (US) or Exynos 9810 chipset (UK) and its fingerprint sensor is perfectly positioned on the back.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will launch worldwide on March 16 at $719.99 (≈P37,446) and $839.99 (≈P43,679), respectively. Both are available in four colors: Lilac Purple, Midnight Black, Titanium Gray and Coral Blue. 


A follow-up to 2015’s super secure GranitePhone, the Sikurphone has a 5.5-inch display, a 13MP rear and 5MP front camera, a 2,800 mAh battery, 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage and a MediaTek processor. But what makes it so special, you ask? It's an Android device that comes with an extremely secure cryptocurrency wallet so this one's perfect if you're big on bitcoin. It also has its own encrypted messaging platform and internet browser so you're sure that no one is spying on you.

It is now available for pre-order on Sikur's website for $799 (≈P41,546).


Xperia XZ2

Not only can the 5.7-inch Xperia XZ2 shoot HDR photos with 4K resolution, it can also record super slow motion videos at 1080p resolution wih its 19MP motion eye camera. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, packs 4GB of RAM, a 3,180mAh battery, 64GB of storage and is also water resistant at IP65/68. It is available in four colors: Liquid Black, Liquid Silver, Deep Green and Ash Pink.
