Four Fashionistas Showcased Their ‘New Normal’ Style Through KENZO

Four fashion-forward personalities tackle their new lockdown lifestyles in Kenzo!

Mixing comfort with structured pieces, four style-savvy personalities are embracing luxe casual and athleisure in Kenzo’s latest collections through polished, pulled-together looks. Donny Pangilinan, Maureen Wroblewitz, Rei Germar, and Daniel Miranda show us what their “new normal” style looks like.

Combining key pieces from Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s first Kenzo collection as the brand’s creative director (such as the house’s basic pieces reinterpreted in a functional and elegant way) as well as distinct pieces from the recently launched Kenzo x Kansai Yamamoto, the looks that form this contemporary wardrobe are as fun and edgy as they are simultaneously ultra-comfortable.

Designed with ease of movement in mind, both collections are inspired by nature and the world as a land of discovery. The prints seen throughout revisit fauna and flora in a camouflage version while the iconic Kenzo tiger gets reinterpreted in so many ways.

Donny Pangilinan, thanks to his active lifestyle, is immediately drawn to and at ease in a printed long-sleeved Kenzo x Kansai Yamamoto oversize T-shirt in lavender. At back, just below the neckline is an embroidered Tiger Crest logo. The 22-year-old actor and musician pairs this with jogging trousers featuring contrasting Tiger Crest embroidery on the front. Sweet kicks complete the picture with lace-up Kenzo x Kansai Yamamoto low-top calfskin trainers. Along with the 3D K printed on the side, they are decorated with the signature colors of the Kenzo collection in a subtle evocation of nature. A nice little detail comes by way of the two-tone rubber outsole. A great casual sportswear look for an avid athlete.

Known for winning the fifth season of Asia’s Next Top Model, 22-year-old Maureen Wroblewitz Kenzo stands out in a soft and lightweight mohair jumper featuring an original ‘Kenzo Horses’ print taken from the archives and ribbed at the collar, cuffs, and hem. Over this, the fresh-faced German-Filipina opted for a loose fit jacket in cotton blend canvas with an embroidered patch of the iconic “Tiger head” on the chest. Easy to wear, the jacket has a drawstring hem, raglan sleeves, enameled snap buttons, and a raised collar. Her easy-to-wear cargo shorts are inspired by the military trend and instead of a traditional belt, feature a foldable insert that affords the piece originality. Completing the sporty-feminine ensemble is the Onda glacé leather bucket bag, which offers an elegant, minimalist design and plenty of space for your everyday essentials. Practical as it is pretty, the bag is embossed with the Kenzo logo while the strap is removable.

Serial entrepreneur, vlogger, and content creator, Rei Germar at only 24 years of age, is already quite the fashion maven. Germar knows how to stand out in a crowd and pairs a classic-cut T-shirt with an all-eyes-on-you midi skirt—the perfect blend of casual and refined. The embroidered Tiger Crest on the chest of her tee serves as a nice contrast while the all-over ‘Aquarelle’ floral motif of the skirt renders a bohemian touch and its frills add even more charm to the overall look. The best part? A skirt that comes with side pockets! Completing the look is the very on-trend mini Onda glacé leather crossbody phone holder with a knotted strap adorned with a metallic logo and the Kourt ‘K Logo’ leather sneakers with 3-cm two-tone rubber sole (who doesn’t like added height?), ideal for adding an urban touch to an otherwise smart outfit.

Daniel Miranda straddles both the high fashion and sporty worlds in an ivory long-sleeved sweatshirt featuring the Kenzo tiger rendered in a two-tone illustration by neo-realist painter, Júlio Pomar. And decorative topstitching on the hem and sleeve cuffs. The 23-year-old influencer paired this statement piece with slightly flared cotton jersey trousers. The finishing touches to this polished ensemble are luxe accessories; to start, a Kenzo x Kansai Yamamoto pouch with Kansai’s roaring cheetah embroidered front and center, surrounded by the iconic calligraphy the desiggner is known for. And lastly, the leather K-Mount ankle boots in black are not only elegant in design but are “hiking-inspired” all-terrain footwear—an aspect that racecar driver Miranda more than appreciates.

About the Collections

Stepping in line with the vision behind Oliveira Baptista’s campaign for his very first collection as Kenzo’s creative director—a photographic road trip in The Azores (shot by Glen Luchford and styled by Jane How)—the mood expressed is the “going places” spirit of the collection. In essence, the FW20 collection is all about a youthful nomadic spirit, freedom, movement, and a nod to Kenzo’s timeless style.

For the Kenzo x Kansai Yamamoto drop, Oliveira Baptista’s second collaboration with an artist, he chose to shine a light on the illustrious Japanese designer, and another pioneer in the fusion of western and eastern cultures. Kansai Yamamoto, who in fact moved to London shortly after the house’s founder, Kenzo Takada settled in Paris, was celebrated for his takes on calligraphy motifs and the representation of animals in Japanese art.

Takada and Yamamoto (tragically they both passed away recently—rendering the collection the ultimate tribute to them) were obsessed with animalia. Animals and animal prints often gained a pop/manga treatment at Kansai, while at Kenzo, it was more about their celebration and interaction with nature.

Motifs and artworks from Kansai’s archives were reworked and mixed with archival prints from KENZO. The clothes were kept very simple and pragmatic. Both Kenzo and Kansai believed in comfort “easy to move in” clothes. Both believed that fashion should talk to everyone. #KENZOxKANSAIYAMAMOTO #KenzoFW20
