Dennison is from Naenae, Lower Hutt. He is one of four children in a Māori family. He has a twin brother, named Christian.
He was cast in his first film, Shopping (2013), after a casting session held at his school. He followed this with the Australian film Paper Planes (2015). Waititi then cast Julian in the lead role in Hunt for the Wilderpeople without making him audition for the part. It has been announced that he will play a role in Deadpool 2, which is set be released in 2018.
