QCShorts 2021

Here are the Finalists of QCinema’s #QCShorts Competition

QCinema International Film Festivalā€™s #QCShorts are back.

Festival organizers announceĀ the six entries chosen to compete in this yearā€™s #QCShorts competition. Each film willĀ receive a production grant worth P350,000 with ownership of film rights. These films will premiere in this yearā€™s QCinema that is set for the last quarter of this year.

QCinema Festival Director Ed Lejano says ā€œIt has been a series of pivots in these trying times where festivals all over have been hit hard & struggling to present new works. This year, we are bringing back one of our audienceā€™s favorites, our QCShorts competition, for them to look forward to this year, whether it will be theatrical or streaming.ā€œ

Out of hundreds of entries, QCinema has chosen to award six grants to a promising batch of filmmakers in a line-up thatā€™s edgy and diverse.Ā It spans a range of visionary stories – from nostalgic coming-of-age & topical LGBTQ themes, compelling dramas amidst urban & regional settings, to experimental fiction & wacky mockumentary.

The winning entries areĀ SkylabĀ by Chuck Escasa;Ā Ampangabagat Nin Talakba Ha Likol byĀ Maria Estela Paiso;Ā i get so sad sometimes by Trishtan Perez;Ā MIGHTY ROBO VĀ by Miko Livelo andĀ Mihk Vergara;Ā HenryĀ by Kaj Palanca; and City of FlowersĀ by Xeph Suarez.

Skylab by Chuck Escasa is about two troubled boys, a satellite falling to the earth, and dark forces threatening the world.

Ampangabagat Nin Talakba Ha LikolĀ tells the story of Maya who isĀ forced to go home to Zambales and confront a house that terrorizes her as frogs rain outside.

i get so sad sometimesĀ is about a gay teenager eagerly waiting for a mature man to finally reveal his face after developing an anonymous sexual relationship with him online.

MIGHTY ROBO VĀ tells what happens whenĀ a documentary crew covering the Philippine Giant Monster Defense Institute’s Mighty Robo V program learns that the wrong people were hired for the job.

Henry is about a teenager longing for another life when he visits a mansion’s construction site to seek compensation for his older brother’s work injury.

City of Flowers is set in 2013, when the City of Zamboanga is celebrating the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, just before the Zamboanga siege.  It tells the story of a pregnant couple trying to survive a drought wreaking havoc on their flower farm and raising enough money for the childbirth.

Livelo, Vergara, Suarez, and Palanca are comebacking QCinema directors.

In 2014, Livelo directed the #QCShorts entry Sa Ngalan ni Ultimate Warrior. Vergara, in 2015, joined the Circle Competition and his entry Patintero: Ang Alamat ni Meng Patalo won the audience and gender sensitivity awards.

Suarezā€™ short film Si Astri maka si Tambulah made it to QCinema 2017 shorts competition. He also produced the QCinema 2016 Best Short Film Hondo.

Palanca co-wrote and co-directed the short film Contestant #4, the Audience Choice Award winner at the 2016 QCinema International Film Festival.
