Warner Bros. has recently announced the premiere date for Wonka — the prequel to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The movie, which premieres in cinemas on March 17, 2023, and will follow a young Willy Wonka, as well as his adventures before he opened he world’s most famous chocolate factory.
The production company first announced theirs plans for the prequel back in 2016. Paul King, who helmed Paddington will be directing Wonka, with a screenplay from Simon Rich. Meanwhile, Harry Potter‘s David Heyman will be putting on his producer hat once again for the project.
Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory follows Charlie Bucket and his adventures inside Willy Wonka’s eccentric chocolate factory.
Since its publication in 1964, the book has spawned two movie adaptations. One was in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where Gene Wilder played the chocolate tycoon. The other was Tim Burton’s 2005 film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp taking on the role of Willy Wonka.
Aside from the Warner Bros. prequel, Netflix has also announced that they will also be producing 2 new projects set in the world of Dahl’s book. One project is about the world and characters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory we’re all familiar with. The other will be focusing on the Oompa-Loompas. Both will be coming from director Taika Waititi.
