Twenty-three years ago, the first Scream film came out in theaters and became a cult classic. Now the masked murderer will be making a comeback for a fifth film, with actress Courteney Cox reprising her role as Gale Weathers.
The FRIENDS alum and Scream franchise star posted on Instagram a video of the iconic gaping mask with the words “I can’t wait to see this face again.” According to CNN, a representative of Cox has confirmed that the actress is reprising her role as the for a fifth film.
The Hollywood Reporter has also reported a few months ago that David Arquette, Cox’s ex-husband, will also reprise his role in the franchise as Sheriff Dewey Riley.
“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” Arquette said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”
The fifth installment of the Scream franchise will be the first one not to be directed by the late director Wes Craven. Instead, the Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett team-up (Ready or Not) will be on the helm of the project.
The film is expected for release on 2021.
